Truncated file name when printing to Bluebeam PDF Printer

Problem

The name of the PDF file is truncated or cut off when printing to the Bluebeam PDF printer. For example, you have a drawing called Drawing1234.dwg that you’re printing to the Bluebeam PDF printer, but the name in the Save As dialog is Drawi.pdf.

Cause

The Windows print queue has a 140 character limit for file names, which includes the drive letter, colon, back-slashes, and spaces in the file path. This is significantly less than the 260 character limit for file names.

Normally, the Save As dialog lets you enter more than 140 characters because you’re entering the name of the file being printed, not the file being saved. The issue is that the output of the print job is a new PDF file. This file must be saved, which is where the character limit comes into play.

Solution

To prevent this issue, you can either move the file to a new location higher in the file path, or give the file a name that’s less than 140 characters.
