Since Revu 2019, the “Use Embedded Scale” toggle has been removed and the default behavior is to always use the embedded page scale. In some instances, however, a temporary scale can be set on a PDF:

• Using Revu in View Mode.
• Working on a file in a Studio Session.
• Working on a file in Studio Projects that has not been checked out.
• A PDF with read-only permissions, or read-only with basic markup permissions.

In these scenarios, a temporary scale can be applied, which allows for measurements of a different scale to be placed while maintaining the document’s original page scale.

Using a Temporary Scale

A temporary scale is created the same way you would set the true page scale. The difference is that, when setting a temporary scale a notice appears stating, “This document’s page scale is protected.” This means that, once you close the document, the temporary scale will be deleted and the document will return to its original scale.

To set a temporary scale on a protected document:

1. Open the Measurements panel (Alt+U).
2. In the Page Scale section underneath the message, “This document’s page scale is protected,” create a preset or custom scale. You may also click the Calibrate button to generate a temporary scale based on the distance between two points.

Once a temporary scale has been set, the measurements you place afterwards will adhere to that scale. Only the measurements of the person who created the temporary scale will be affected by the temporary scale. Other users’ measurements will still appear according to the actual page scale.

Removing a temporary scale

Although temporary scales are deleted after closing a document, markups measured with the temporary scale will not adjust back to the original scale.. To change the scale of existing measurements back to the true page scale, you can use the Recalibrate button within the Measurement Panel (Alt+U). This will update the scale of all your markups to the current page scale. Note that this will recalibrate markups placed before the temporary scale was created as well.

Exporting a document with a temporary scale

PDFs uploaded to a Studio Session are protected documents, so creating a temporary scale in a Session is possible. Once the PDF is removed from the Session and saved to your device, however, it is no longer a protected document capable of having a temporary scale. In this situation, any measurements placed on the PDF while it was within the Session will continue to display according to the temporary scale they once had. Moving a measurement to a new location on the PDF, however, will cause it to be recalibrated according to the true page scale. You’ll see the measurement’s value immediately update on the PDF as well as in the markups list.

Viewports

Temporary scales can only be set on protected documents that fall into one of the categories listed above. If you’re working in an unprotected document, you can create viewports to set a scale different from the rest of the document.

To create a viewport:

1. Open the Measurements panel (Alt+U).
2. Click + in the Viewports section.
3. Click and drag around the desired area.
4. Name the viewport, and choose between a preset or custom scale.

You’ll now see a blue viewport on your PDF. Any measurement created within it will adhere to the scale you’ve set.
