Polylength Measurement

1. Go to Tools > Measure > Polylength or press SHIFT+ALT+Q. The Polylength measurement mode is engaged.
   • Alternatively, click Polylength on the Measurements panel.
2. By default, measurements are taken in the same units used to set the page scale and secondary dimensions like depth and slope are not set. Any or all of these can be changed from the Properties toolbar or from the Measurements panel as described below:
   • Setting a depth for the measurement allows for additional calculations like Wall Area on the Markups list. To set a Depth, go to the Measurement Properties section on the Measurements panel and enter the desired value, then select the units of measure from the associated menu.
   • Setting a slope for the measurement allows for additional calculations like materials over a sloped plane. To set a Slope, go to the Measurement Properties section on the Measurements panel and select a unit of measure for it (Pitch, Degree, or Grade), then enter the value in the corresponding field.
   • Measurements can be taken in units different from those used to set the page scale. To change the units used for a specific measurement dimension, go to the Measurement Properties section of the Measurements panel and select the desired measurement units from the available dimension dropdown lists.
   • Any or all of these can also be set from the Units dropdown menu on the Properties toolbar.

   Note: When changes are made to one or more of these properties before placing the measurement, they will persist until a different action is initiated (for example, placing a different type of measurement). This makes placing several measurements with the same properties easier. Keep in mind that all of these properties can be changed for specific measurements after they are placed; see Tips below.

3. In the document, click the end points of the first line segment.
4. Click the end point of the next line segment. Repeat this process to create as many line segments as desired.
   • Note that, if the Show Segment Values is enabled (either by clicking on the Measurement panel or by enabling that option on the Properties Panel), the length of the segment currently being placed is shown as well as the measurement's cumulative length. Segment length is shown over the segment itself while the cumulative length is shown on the opposite side of the cursor. The exception to this is when placing the first segment, when the segment length and the cumulative length are the same and only one value is shown.

5. To "close" the shape, click on the starting point of the first line segment.

   Note: Even though their start and end points can touch, Polylength measurements are always considered open shapes and will behave as such. For a closed-shape measurement, see Area Measurement.

6. To complete the shape without "closing" it, do one of the following:
   • Press C or ENTER on the keyboard.
   • Double-click when placing the last point.

If the page scale has been set, a preview of key measurement values will appear in the lower-right corner of the drawing as you place measurements to help ensure precision. You can hide this preview window by clicking the X to its left. When minimized, the preview window is replaced with a measure icon; click this icon to recall the measurement values preview window. Note that you can hide and recall this preview window while placing a measurement.

Tips:

• Hold down SHIFT to draw lines that are at horizontal, vertical, or 45° angles.
• Several measurement properties can be changed after the measurement has been placed, including Subject, Label, units of measure, and any applicable optional dimensions like Slope or Depth. Click a measurement so it is active and go to the Measurement Properties section on the Measurements panel to view and change any of these for the selected markup.

  • Depth allows for additional calculations, such as wall area or material volume, on the Markups list. To set a depth for the markup, enter a value and select a unit of measure. Depth is mutually exclusive with Rise/Drop.

  • Rise/Drop allows for accurate measurements of materials that run up or down from one floor to the next, such as piping or conduit. The value entered here represents the total amount of rise and/or drop and will be added to the length total. To set a rise/drop for the markup, enter a value; the unit of measure is automatically the same one used for the markup length. Rise/Drop is mutually exclusive with Depth.

• Segments of a the measurement can be split from the original markup. To do so, right-click the desired segment and select Split. To break a the measurement into its segmented parts, select Split All.

To remove markups from a PDF, select the markup or markups on the PDF or from the Markups list and do one of the following:

• Press DELETE on the keyboard.
• Right-click and select Delete.

You can add an action to nearly any markup. Simply right-click the markup and select Edit Action to open the Action dialog box.

Markups might present with one or more of several indicator icons alerting users of certain conditions or attachments. These icon indicators appear below the markup to the right (or, in the case of grouped markups, below and to the right of the group) and include:

Action: Indicates that an action has been defined for this markup. Clicking this icon triggers the action.

Capture: Indicates that the markup has an embedded media, typically an image or video. Clicking this icon opens a preview window showing the embedded media (or first piece of media, if multiple are embedded) and provides easy access to several useful tools.

Reply: Indicates the existence of one or more replies to the markup in the Markups list. Hovering over the icon previews the replies and clicking it opens the Markups list (if it's not already open) and jumps directly to the markup's entry there. Users can turn off the ability to see reply indicators in the View menu.

Select a markup to reveal its control handles. Each handle controls a different aspect of the markup's size and orientation.

To rotate the markup, click and drag the orange handle outside the markup (when the markup is first placed, it will be at the top). By default, the markup is rotated in increments of 15°; to rotate in increments of 1°, hold down SHIFT while dragging.

To move the entire markup together, click and drag a part of it other than the control handles.

To move only the caption, click and drag it while holding down SHIFT. To return the caption to its default position, right-click it and select Reset Caption Position. To move multiple captions at the same time, SHIFT-click them, then click and drag one of the selected captions while holding down SHIFT. Note that, if multiple captions in a Polylength measurement are moved, right-clicking one and selecting Reset Caption Position will reset the positions of them all.

To rotate the caption, click and drag the orange handle directly over it. By default, the markup is rotated in increments of 15°; to rotate in increments of 1°, hold down SHIFT while dragging.To return a rotated caption to its original position, right-click it and select Reset Caption Position. Note that only the cumulative length caption can be rotated; while the length captions of the segments cannot be rotated, they can be adjusted to align on the segment or horizontally in the Appearance Properties.

• To rotate the caption 180°, right-click the markup and select Flip Text.

The appearance of the Polylength measurement is configurable, including its line and fill color, line width and style, opacity, and font characteristics for the caption.

To change the appearance of a Polylength measurement, select it and click the Properties panel. Go to Window > Panels > Properties or press ALT+P to show the Properties panel if it is hidden. Several properties will also be available on the Properties toolbar when the markup is selected.

Appearance Properties

Color: Sets the line color.

Fill Color: Controls the fill color of the endpoints.

Highlight: Makes the fill color and line transparent so underlying content shows through.

Opacity: Sets opacity level of the line and endpoints, from 0 (invisible) to 100 (opaque).

Line Width: Sets the line thickness in points. A setting of 0 effectively renders the line invisible.

Style: Determines the line pattern.

Style: Determines the line pattern.

Start and End: Controls the appearance of the endpoints for each side of the line. The diagram below shows samples of each type of endpoint.

Each endpoint has an associated Scale that determines the size of the endpoint in relation to the Line Width. By default, it is set to Auto and will automatically adjust as the Line Width is changed.

Show Segment Values: Select to show the segment lengths on the markup. Select an alignment for these captions:

• Align to Segment: When selected, segment length captions will follow the segment line when it is rotated.
• Align Horizontally: When selected, segment length captions will always be horizontal, regardless of the markup's rotation.

Show Caption: Select to include caption text on the markup. Click Edit to choose which measurements to include.

Font: Sets the font used for the selected text. Available fonts are divided into three regions:

• The first region shows all fonts used in the currently selected text element.
• The second region lists the standard PDF fonts that are supported by all PDF viewers. These fonts do not need to be embedded in the PDF when used, thereby cutting down on file size.
• The third shows all other available fonts. When used, these fonts need to be embedded in the PDF.

Note: If you attempt to embed a font for which the viewing and editing permissions do not allow formatting, Revu will display a message indicating the font will not be embedded in the PDF.

Font parameters are retained in the PDF such that even if the original font is not embedded or on the viewer's workstation, a suitable representation of the font will be substituted.

Font Size: Sets the size of the font. While the list shows sizes ranging from 2 to 72, font sizes between 1 to 144 points are supported; just enter the desired size manually. Also, values with up to one digit after the decimal point can be used.

Text Color: Sets the color of text.

Font Style: These settings control the formatting of the text. Options include Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikethrough. Generally, any combination of these styles can be applied to format the text.
