Set page scales
Accurate page scales are essential for taking precise measurements in Revu. If a page doesn't have a scale, Revu prompts you to set one before placing a measurement. You can set a page scale in several ways, depending on your needs:
- Use a preset scale: if the scale is known and common, or if you have saved it previously.
- Enter a custom scale: if you know the scale but it is not in your presets.
- Calibrate the scale: if you are unsure of the scale or suspect scaling errors in the PDF.
Pages can have separate X and Y scales, and you can set different scales for different areas (viewports). See Viewports for more information.
You can set scales for one or more pages at once. You can also use the Measurements panel or Thumbnails panel to set scales quickly.
Revu includes several common scales and lets you save custom or calibrated scales as presets. You can apply any preset scale to one or more pages.
- Go to Tools > Measure >
Set Scale.- Or, select the page scale on the Navigation bar or Status bar. If no scale is set, select Scale Not Set.
- Choose the pages to apply the scale to from the Pages dropdown:
- All Pages: Sets the range to all pages.
- Current: Sets the range to the current page only. The current page number will appear in parentheses, for example, Current (2) if page 2 is the current page. This is the default selection.
- Selected: Sets the range to the current selection. This option only appears if pages were selected prior to invoking the command.
- Custom: Sets the range to a custom value. When you select this option, replace any text left in the field with the page or pages to be printed directly. To enter a custom range:
- Use a dash between page numbers to define those two pages and all pages in between.
- Use a comma to define pages that are separated.
For example: 1-3, 5, 9 will include pages 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9.
For Revu 21, users with Basics subscription plan can apply the scale only to the current page or all pages. - Select Preset and choose the scale from the Scale dropdown.
- Saved custom or calibrated scales appear at the top.
-
To set separate X and Y scales, select Separate Y Scale. The X scale uses your selected preset; set the Y scale using any method (preset, custom, or calibrate).
If you later uncheck Separate Y Scale, the X scale applies to both axes for future measurements. Existing measurements are not affected. - Select the measurement precision from the Precision drop-down. Precision is expressed either as a decimal or a fraction depending on the scale being set (or, in the case of separate X and Y scales, of the X scale).
- Select Apply Scale.
In the preset scales list, find your saved scale at the top. Select
Delete next to it.
You can only delete scales you have saved. Default scales cannot be removed.
If you know the page scale but it is not in the preset list, and you're confident there are no scaling errors, enter a custom scale.
To apply a custom scale, follow these steps:
-
Select Custom and enter the scale:
- Enter the drawing length on the left and the real-world length on the right.
- Select the appropriate units for each. Units do not need to match and can be from different systems.
-
To set separate X and Y scales, select Separate Y Scale.
- To save this scale as a preset for future use, select + Add Preset.
- Select Apply Scale.
If you are unsure whether the PDF was scaled correctly, calibrate the scale using a known length on the drawing.
To calibrate a scale to the PDF, follow these steps:
- Open the calibration tool. There are two ways to get to it:
- Click Calibrate on the Measurements panel.
- Go to Tools > Measure >
Set Scale, select Custom, and click Calibrate.
- If a dialog appears with calibration instructions, select OK.
- Locate a known length on the page. Click the first point, then the second point to draw a line.
- Hold Shift to snap the line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- For vector-based drawings (as opposed to a scanned PDF), enable Snap to Content for more accurate point selection.
- The measured length appears on the left side of the scale equation. Enter the real-world length and select the units on the right. The units of measure don't need to match and can even be from different systems.
- Choose the pages to apply the scale to from the Pages drop-down:
-
To set separate X and Y scales, select Separate Y Scale.
- To save this scale as a preset for future use, select + Add Preset.
- Select Apply Scale.
You can quickly apply a scale set for one page to other pages in the same drawing.
- Go to Window > Panels >
Measurements to show the
Measurements panel. -
Select Add Scale to More Pages.
If this button is not available, no scale is set for the current page. - Choose the pages to apply the scale to from the Pages drop-down:
- Select Apply Scale.
To apply the scale to a different drawing, repeat steps 1 and 2, then click + Add Preset to save it. You can then select it as a preset scale in the other drawing.
