Bluebeam Revu Tool Chest guide

Applies to:

  • Revu 21

The Tool Chest in Revu stores customized markups for quick access and reuse across PDFs. The Tool Chest allows you to set up, manage, and work with tool sets to streamline your markup workflow.

Access and Display the Tool Chest

To open the Tool Chest panel, go to Window > Panels > Tool Chest. The panel organizes your markups into tool sets, each containing related markups for specific workflows or project types.

The Tool Chest organizes your markups into tool sets; each containing related markups for specific workflows or project types. Each Profile comes with a certain number of additional tool sets enabled by default.

There are two tool sets that are available in all Profiles:

  • My Tools is a permanent tool set for markups that you use frequently. Any markup stored in this panel will remain if you close and reopen Revu.
  • Recent Tools is a permanent tool set that records recently used markups. This enables you to easily reuse a recent markup without needing to recreate it. Tools in the Recent Tools tool set are temporary; the tool set is cleared when you close Revu. Tools can be saved permanently by moving them out of Recent Tools to another tool set before closing it.

Configure the display to match your working preferences:

  • Symbol view: Displays tools as visual icons only.
  • Detail view: Displays tools in a table format with Subject, Comment, and Label text for easier identification.
  • Size adjustment: Use the slider at the bottom to scale tool icons larger or smaller.

Switch between views by selecting the Properties icon for any tool set and selecting Symbol or Detail.

Manage markup modes and tool behavior

Control how your saved markups behave when placed by choosing between two application modes: Properties Mode and Drawing Mode. These modes determine whether new markups use only the saved appearance properties or create exact duplicates of the original markup.

Properties Mode (default for most tools):

  • Creates new markups using only the saved appearance properties.
  • Requires you to define dimensions, text content, and positioning.
  • Best for maintaining consistent formatting while varying content.

Drawing Mode:

  • Creates exact duplicates of the original markup.
  • Preserves dimensions, text, positioning, and all other attributes.
  • Best for repeated placement of identical elements.

To toggle between modes, double-click any markup, or right-click a markup and select Properties Mode or Drawing Mode. You can also select multiple markups before you right-click and select Toggle Mode.

Set Up Tool Scaling

When working with drawings at different scales, configure tool sets to automatically adjust:

  1. Select the Properties icon for your tool set
  2. Select Set Scale.
  3. Define the baseline scale.
  4. Select Apply Scale.

Toggle scaling using the scale icon that appears next to the tool set name. Tools scale automatically when placed on calibrated drawings. Once placed, each tool's scale becomes fixed.

Share and collaborate with tool sets

Sharing tool sets helps your team work consistently and efficiently. You can export your custom tool sets, import tool sets from others, and set up shared tool sets on a network for collaborative editing.

  1. Select the Properties icon for the tool set you want to share.
  2. Select Export.
  3. Choose a save location and file name for the .btx file.
  4. Select Save.

The tool set saves as a .btx file, which you can distribute to your team.
