Editing a flattened PDF prevents markups from being unflattened

Problem

Editing a flattened PDF prevents all markups from being unflattened.

Cause

Markups cannot be unflattened because editing PDF page content changes the flattened markups. When flattening markups in Revu, please be aware that the following commands, if executed on a page containing flattened markups, will prevent all markups on the page from being unflattened:

  • Edit Text
  • Search and Replace
  • Erase Content
  • Cut Content
  • Reduce File Size
  • Apply Redactions
  • Color Processing
    This feature is only available with a Core, Complete, or Max plan.
  • Repair PDF

Solution

If you intend to use these commands to edit a PDF that contains flattened markups, be sure to unflatten your markups prior to executing the commands. You can then re-flatten your markups afterwards. This will keep your markups recoverable.

Flattening Form Fields is always permanent. They cannot be unflattened under any circumstances.
