Cursor and markups move unexpectedly

Problem

When placing markups, your cursor seems to stick to certain points on the document.

Cause

The Snap function is enabled. Snap makes it easier to accurately place your markups by "snapping" your cursor to PDF content or other markups. The buttons to enable and disable Snap options are in the View menu and on the Status Bar. Each button is highlighted in blue when active. Press F8 to display the Status Bar if it isn't currently displayed.

There are six buttons in the Status Bar, allowing you to quickly toggle these settings. It is important to note that Show Grid, Reuse and Sync do not have snap functionality; however, they all relate to markup placement and are therefore important to discuss.

  • Show Grid (Shift+F9): Displays grid points on the PDF page.

  • Snap to Grid (Ctrl+Shift+F9): The cursor snaps to the nearest grid point, even when the grid is not displayed.

  • Snap to Content (Ctrl+Shift+F8): The cursor snaps to the underlying content of the PDF. A small blue square cursor displays when it is near a grid point that it will snap to. A white square displays when the cursor is near an object that it will snap to.

  • Snap to Markup (Ctrl+Shift+F7): The cursor snaps to other markups on the PDF. Horizontal and vertical guidelines display, allowing you to snap to the horizontal or vertical location of points on other markups, even if they are not currently displayed. Snap to Markup is very useful when creating forms or any type of document where markups should be perfectly aligned.

  • Reuse Markup Tools: Enables the same tool to be used multiple times without having to reselect the button on the toolbar. This mode is helpful when adding the same markup onto the PDF multiple times.

  • Synchronize View: Synchronizes the display of multiple PDFs when viewing documents using one of the Split View modes.

Tips and keyboard shortcuts

  • Snap to Content only works with vector content in the PDF. For example, it will snap to lines and arcs in a PDF created from a CAD drawing. The cursor won't snap to image content, like in a scanned PDF. Click here for more information about the different types of content on a PDF.
  • Snap to Content is enabled by default in the Measurement tools. To temporarily display Snap functionality, hold down Ctrl when creating a markup.
  • To snap a line to 0, 45 or 90 degrees, hold down Shift when creating a Line or Length measurement.
  • To customize the grid size and what types of points your markups will snap to, go to Revu > Preferences (Ctrl+K), and select the Grid & Snap tab.
