Problem

When placing markups, your cursor seems to stick to certain points on the document.

Cause

The Snap function is enabled. Snap makes it easier to accurately place your markups by “snapping” your cursor to PDF content or other markups. The buttons to enable and disable Snap options are in two locations, the View menu and the Status Bar, which can be found at the very bottom of the Revu application window. Each button is highlighted in blue when active. Press the F8 key to display the Status Bar if it isn’t currently displayed.

There are six buttons in the Status Bar, allowing you to quickly toggle these settings. It is important to note that Show Grid, Reuse and Sync do not have snap functionality; however, they all relate to markup placement and are therefore important to discuss.

Show Grid (Shift+F9): Displays grid points on the PDF page. This does not make the cursor snap to the points.

Snap to Grid (Ctrl+Shift+F9): When activated, the cursor snaps to the nearest grid point, even when the grid is not displayed.

Snap to Content (Ctrl+Shift+F8): The cursor snaps to the underlying content of the PDF. A small blue-filled square cursor will display when it is near a corner-point that it will snap to. A square (without the blue fill) will display when the cursor is near an object that it will snap to.

Snap to Markup (Ctrl+Shift+F7): The cursor snaps to other markups on the PDF, just like Snap to Content snaps to PDF content. Horizontal and vertical guidelines will also display, allowing you to snap to the horizontal or vertical location of points on other markups, even if they are not currently displayed. Snap to Markup is very useful when creating forms, or any type of document where markups should be perfectly aligned.

Reuse Markup Tools : Enables the same tool to be used multiple times without having to reselect the button on the toolbar. This mode is helpful when adding the same markup onto the PDF multiple times.

Synchronize Document & Synchronize Page: Synchronizes the display of multiple PDFs when viewing documents using one of the Split View modes.

Tips and keyboard shortcuts

  • Snap to Content only works with vector content in the PDF. For example, it will snap to lines and arcs in a PDF created from a CAD drawing. It will not snap to image content, like in a scanned PDF. Click here for more information about the different types of content on the PDF page.
  • Snap functionality can be temporarily disabled by holding down the Ctrl key when creating a markup.
  • Hold down the Shift key when creating a Line or Length measurement to snap the line to 0, 45 or 90 degrees.
  • Snap to Content is enabled by default in the Measurement tools. Hold down the Ctrl key to disable the snap temporarily or uncheck the Snap to Content check box at the bottom of the Measurement tab to disable it permanently.
  • You can customize the grid size and what types of points your markups will snap to. Click Revu > Preferences then click Grid & Snap or press Ctrl+K and then click Grid & Snap.
  • Split View allows you to divide the Revu display into multiple panes so you can view multiple PDFs at a time.

Revu 2017 and older

Revu has a number of Snap options that allow you to more accurately place markups and measurements on a PDF. However, if you don’t know that one of the options is enabled, your mouse cursor may appear to jump, move unexpectedly, or select the wrong point. The buttons to enable and disable Snap options are in two locations, the Settings revu-settings-32x32 menu and the Status Bar, which is at the very bottom of the Revu window. Each button is highlighted when it is active. Press the F8 key to display the Status Bar if it isn’t currently displayed.

It is important to note that displaying the grid, Reuse and Sync do not have snap functionality; however, they all relate to markup placement and are therefore important to discuss. The order and names of the buttons changed slightly in Revu 2016.

Show Grid show-grid / Grid Shift+F9: Displays blue grid points on the PDF page, but does not snap to them.

Snap to Grid snap-to-grid / Snap (Revu 2015) / Grid (Revu 2016) Ctrl+Shift+F9: Cursor snaps to the nearest grid point, even when the grid is not displayed.

Snap to Content snap-to-content / Content Ctrl+Shift+F8: Cursor snaps to the underlying content of the PDF. A small blue-filled square cursor will display when it is near a point that it will snap to. A square (without the blue fill) will display when the cursor is near an object that it will snap to. For example, the image below shows the cursor when a Length measurement is snapping to a point:

Snap to Markup snap-to-markup / Markup Ctrl+Shift+F7: Snaps to other markups in the PDF, just like Content snaps to PDF content. Also displays horizontal and vertical “construction lines” that allow you to snap to the horizontal or vertical location of points on other markups, even if they are not currently displayed. The Markup snap is very useful when creating forms.

Reuse Markup Tools reuse-markup-tools / Reuse: Enables the same tool to be used multiple times without having to reselect the button on the toolbar. This mode is helpful when adding the same markup onto the PDF multiple times.
Synchronize Views synchronize-views / Sync: Synchronizes the display of split views when viewing the PDF using the Split View modes.
