How to select markups

Applies to:

  • Revu 21
  • Revu 20

Markup selection in Revu is a simple process, but you can quickly adjust to any workflow and increase your overall productivity if you learn the various ways to select and deselect markups.

Select a markup

To select a markup, click its edge. If the markup has text, fill color, or hatch pattern, you can click anywhere inside the markup to select it. If the markup is selectable, your cursor will change to a black arrow.

Select all markups

Use Ctrl+A to select all markups.

Selecting all markups also selects markups across multiple pages.

Cancel the selection of a markup

To cancel the selection of one or more selected markups, you can click an area outside of the selected markups, or press Esc.

Rectangle select

You can use the Select tool to draw a rectangle that selects multiple markups at once. The direction you draw the rectangle changes which markups are selected. Drawing from left to right selects all the markups contained within the rectangle, while drawing from right to left selects everything intersected by and within the rectangle.

If you're using the Pan tool, you can quickly draw a rectangle without switching to the Select tool by holding down the Shift key and dragging like you normally would.

Lasso select

The Lasso tool allows you to quickly make a free-form selection.

Unlike similar tools, Lasso traces a dotted line from the point where you began drawing to your cursor, and automatically closes when you release the mouse.

To select all markups within the shape or intersect it, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Edit > Lasso.
  2. Left-click your mouse and draw any shape to select your markups.

You can also use the Lasso tool with a right-click (or stylus equivalent) while using an inking tool (like the Pen or Highlighter). To enable this functionality, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Revu > Preferences.
  2. In the Preferences dialog, go to Window > Tablet.
  3. Select Enable right-click Lasso while inking.

Select multiple markups individually

To select multiple markups one at a time, Shift+click each markup. If you include a markup you don't want, Shift+click on the markup again to remove the selection.

Shift+click can be used in conjunction with any of the markup selection methods listed here to add or remove individual markups from a selection.

Use this method when a rectangle or free-form selection won't do an adequate job. For example:

  • The markups you need to edit aren't in the same vicinity.
  • You need to omit certain markups within a region.
  • You can point and click on markups faster than you can draw a selection.
  • You selected multiple markups with a different method, but found that you need to add one or two others to the selection.
  • You accidentally selected the wrong markups.

Cycle through overlapping markups

This feature is available in Revu 21.4 .

Drawings can become cluttered with multiple overlapping markups, making it challenging to select a specific one.

To cycle through overlapping markups, hover over the area with overlapping markups and hold down the Shift key. This will display a popover listing all the markups in that location. From here, you can press Shift+Space to cycle through the different markups. Alternatively, you can directly click on the markup you want to select from within the popover.

Markups List

The Markups List displays a list of all the markups in the document, along with details about each.

To access the Markups List, select the Markups List icon at the bottom left of the Revu interface.

Select markups

Selecting a markup in this list highlights and selects it on the document. Conversely, selecting a markup on the document also selects and highlights its corresponding line item in the Markups List. The Markups List can be useful when the document you're working on is cluttered. By using the Sort, Filter, Search, and Columns features, you can quickly narrow down the list and find what you need.

You can select markups in the Markups List in a few ways:

  • Select a single markup to highlight it. The corresponding markup on the page will also be selected.

  • To select multiple markups, hold down Ctrl and select the ones you want.

  • To select a range of consecutive markups, select the first markup, then hold down Shift and select the last one.

You can perform actions on selected markups, such as changing its status or properties.

Primary Markups

The color of the control points on a selected markup changes depending on the order of selection. Yellow control points designate a primary (or first) markup, while green control points designate a secondary markup.

The primary markup acts as a reference point, which is important for certain Revu features. For example, alignment tools will align to the primary markup.

Keep in mind the following when working with primary markups:

  • If you select multiple markups, the first will be the primary markup by default.

  • To change the primary markup, select a markup with green control points. This allows you to use any selection method in conjunction with the Alignment toolbar or the Markups List.

  • You can also change the primary markup by right-clicking, which has the advantage of bringing up the Alignment context menu for easy access.
