Create headers and footers
You can add custom headers and footers to one or more PDFs or edit existing headers and footers. This section describes adding and editing headers and footers to a single file. To apply or edit headers and footers for multiple files, see Batch Processing Headers and Footers.
Generally, documents can have only one editable header and footer; in Revu, that's considered to be the first header and footer defined for a document.
To add content to a document with a header and/or footer, consider editing the master header and footer.
However, you can also add content to the header or footer areas of a document that is not a part of the master header and footer configuration (for example, to place information in an unoccupied space on the header or footer in a different font or color). Be aware that, while this can be done, any header or footer information added in this way will not be editable. Revu will place the desired information on the designated pages without changing the master header and footer configuration, but if content placed by way of these secondary headers and footers needs to be updated later, it must to be removed and reapplied. Additionally, be cautious of overlapping content when adding secondary headers and footers.
To add a header or footer to the active PDF, follow these steps:
-
Go to Document >
Headers & Footers > Add. - To use a previously saved batch of PDFs, select Load and select the desired file.
- Revu automatically adds active PDFs to the process. To add more PDFs, select Add and use one or more of the following methods:
- Files: Adds individual files from a network or local drive. Selecting this option causes the Open dialog to appear. Navigate to the appropriate location and select the desired files.
- Open Files: Adds all files currently open in Revu.
- Open Set: Adds all files contained in the current Set.
- Folder: Adds all files in a selected folder on a network or local drive, but not files contained in any of its subfolders. Selecting this option causes the Select Folder dialog to appear. Navigate to the desired folder and select it.
- Folder and Subfolders: Adds all files in a selected folder on a network or local drive as well as all files within any of its subfolders. Selecting this option causes the Select Folder dialog to appear. Navigate to the desired folder and select it.
- By default, any document in the Files list will be affected. To remove a document from the Files list, select it then select Remove.
- To specify which pages of a PDF will be processed, select it, then select the Pages menu and select one of the following options:
- All Pages: Sets the range to all pages.
- Current: Sets the range to the current page only.
- Custom: Sets the range to a custom value. When you select this option, replace any text left in the field with the page or pages to be printed directly. To enter a custom range:
- Use a dash between page numbers to define those two pages and all pages in between.
- Use a comma to define pages that are separated.
For example: 1-3, 5, 9 will include pages 1, 2, 3, 5 and 9.
- Current View: Limits the process to the current zoom.
- Even Pages: Limits the process to only even pages.
- Odd Pages: Limits the process to only odd pages.
- Landscape Pages: Limits the process to only landscape-oriented pages.
- Portrait Pages: Limits the process to only portrait-oriented pages.
- To save this batch for future use, select Save and save the batch to a local or network drive.
- Select Next.
- To use a previously configured header/footer template, select the template from the Save Settings list. Select OK to use the template unmodified, or proceed to the next step to make modifications.
-
There are six boxes in the Header and Footer section representing the right, left and center areas of the header and footer, respectively. To populate these fields with a previously configured header/footer template, select it from the Save Settings list. Otherwise, add information to any of these by selecting the desired box and entering text or selecting one of the Insert buttons, which are described below.

- Page Number: Auto-generates a page number value in the chosen format.

- Date: Auto-generates the date in the chosen format.

- Bates Number: Auto-generates a Bates number with fixed number of digits and a user-defined prefix and suffix.

- File Data: Inserts a selected file property, such as the file name, document path, author, and more.

- Page Number: Auto-generates a page number value in the chosen format.
- Define the appearance of header and footer text using the Font controls at the top of the dialog.
- Adjust the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margins by changing the Margins values.
- Margin settings are visible in the Preview section and update dynamically when changes are made.
- To shrink page content to fit within the margins, select Fit content inside margins.
- Use the Preview window to check that the header or footer does not cover any information already on any of the document's pages. Advance through the pages using the navigation controls below the preview window.
- To save this header and footer configuration for use on future documents:
Select Save at the top of the dialog.
- Enter a name for this configuration in the Save Header Footer Settings as field, and select OK.
- Select OK to apply the header and footer.
This process describes removing all headers and footers from selected documents. To remove specific information from a header or a footer, refer to Editing and Updating Headers and Footers.
To remove all secondary headers and footers (see Adding a Header and Footer for information about secondary headers and footers) while preserving the master header and footer, see Editing and Updating Headers and Footers.
To remove all headers and footers from a document, follow these steps:
-
Go to Document >
Headers and Footers > Edit.

-
Select Next.
-
Select Delete All. If a warning dialog box appears, select OK to confirm deletion of the headers and footers.
Some headers and footers can be edited directly. For PDFs created using Revu, this includes any headers or footers created using Revu Windows version 12 or higher or Revu Mac.
If for some reason a document's headers and footers cannot be edited directly, it is recommended to completely remove them and add new headers and footers.
Editing an existing header and footer will automatically apply it to all designated pages, including new pages. In this way, you can update the document's header and footer to accommodate new pages (for example, to update page numbers). Note that when the header or footer of a page is updated, all header and footer information is overwritten; any secondary headers or footers will be lost (see Adding a Header and Footer for information about secondary headers and footers).
To edit headers and footers, follow these steps:
-
Go to Document >
Headers and Footers > Edit. - To use a previously saved batch of PDFs, select Load and select the desired file.

- Files: Adds individual files from a network or local drive. Selecting this option causes the Open dialog to appear. Navigate to the appropriate location and select the desired files.
- Open Files: Adds all files currently open in Revu.
