Cutout tool
The Cutout tool lets you subtract an area from an existing Area or Volume measurement in Revu.
You can insert cutouts as either polygons or ellipses. Polygons can be further customized by adjusting or curving some or all of their segments. Once created, cutouts can be converted into area or volume markups.
Use the polygon cutout
- Go to Tools > Measure >
Polygon Cutout. - Or select Polygon Cutout from the Measurements panel.
- Find the measurement you want to cut from. Hover over the markup; it’ll highlight in blue.
- Click and drag to draw a rectangle.
- To draw a square, click and drag while holding Shift.
- For other polygon shapes, click once for each corner of the cutout.
- Close the shape by performing one of the following actions:
- Select the first point again to close the shape.
- Press Enter twice or press C on the keyboard to automatically close the shape by connecting the last point placed to the first point placed.
- Double-click when placing the last point to automatically close the shape by connecting the last point placed to the first point placed.
Notes regarding placing non-rectangular polygons:
- Hold Shift to draw lines at horizontal, vertical, or 45° angles.
- To remove the last control point, select Backspace.
- If you want to curve lines into arcs, see Adjust control points and curves below before defining the cutout.
Use the ellipse cutout
- Go to Tools > Measure >
Ellipse Cutout.- Or select Ellipse Cutout from the Measurements panel.
- Find the measurement you want to cut from. Hover over the markup; it’ll highlight in blue.
- Click and drag to draw the ellipse cutout.
- To draw a circle, click and drag while holding Shift.
When you've set the page scale, a preview of key measurement values appears in the lower-right corner as you place measurements to ensure precision. Hide or recall it as needed by selecting the X or the measure icon.
Notes:
- You can create more than one cutout on a single measurement.
- Use Snap To options to place your cutout accurately.
- Multiple polygon cutouts that overlap will merge into one. If a polygonal cutout overlaps the edge of an Area or Volume markup, Revu removes the space automatically; no actual cutout is placed. Curved cutouts can't overlap other cutouts or the edge.
- Cutouts use the same line color, width, and style as the measurement they’re part of.
After you create a cutout within a markup, you can turn it into a standalone area or volume markup. For example, if you cut out a window area from a wall, you can make that window its own area measurement.
- Define the cutout as described above, then exit the cutout tool by selecting Escape.
- Choose the type of markup you want (area or volume):
- To create a markup with the current default properties, go to Measure > Area or Measure > Volume to select it.
- You can also select an area or volume markup from your Tool Chest to create a markup using its properties.
- Move the pointer over the cutout. The pointer becomes a fill icon and the cutout is highlighted. Click to convert the cutout.
- If there are multiple cutouts and you would like to convert them all to the selected markup, hold Shift while clicking.
Control points define where line segments meet in a multi-segment markup. Add or remove control points to adjust the shape. See Working with Control Points for more information.
Convert line segments to curves or arcs at control points to match complex shapes. See Working with Curved Markups for more information.
When converting the lines of a cutout to an arc, whether the arc curves inward (concave) or curves outward (convex) depends on the direction in which the line was originally drawn.
- Drawing clockwise creates concave arcs.
- Drawing counterclockwise creates convex arcs.
The cutout is part of the measurement. Select the measurement to see control handles for both the measurement and the cutout.
Resize a segment or change its angle: Drag the appropriate yellow handle.
- Hold Ctrl while dragging a yellow control handle to curve the lines attached to it. See Working with Curved Markups for more information.
To remove a cutout, right-click one of the lines of the Cutout and select Delete Cutout.
