The Polylength measurement tool places specialized markups that calculate multiple, linear measurements as well as their cumulative length. This can be particularly useful, for example, when measuring individual segments of a continuous piece of material.
Polylength measurements can appear to be similar to Area Measurements, but they are not closed shapes; even when they are created such that their start and end points touch, they are always treated as open shapes.

As with any measurement, be sure to calibrate the document first.
Go to Tools > Measure > Polylength or press SHIFT+ALT+Q. The Polylength measurement mode is engaged.
- Click the end points of the first line segment.
- Click the end point of the next line segment. Repeat this process to create as many line segments as desired.
- Note that, if the Show Segment Values is enabled on the Properties tab, a cumulative length measurement is shown (in addition to the length measurement of the segment itself) when there are multiple segments in the markup.
To "close" the shape, click on the starting point of the first line segment.
Note: Even though their start and end points can touch, Polylength measurements are always considered open shapes and will behave as such. For a closed-shape measurement, see Area Measurement.
- To complete the shape without "closing" it, do one of the following:
- Press ENTER on the keyboard.
- Double-click when placing the last point.
- Hold down SHIFT to draw lines that are at horizontal, vertical, or 45° angles.
- Click the markup so it is active. In the Measurements section on the Measurement panel, certain fields are available to add detail and dimension to the markup, including:
- Depth allows for additional calculations, such as wall area or material volume, on the Markups list. To set a depth for the markup, enter a value and select a unit of measure. Depth is mutually exclusive with Rise/Drop.
- Rise/Drop allows for accurate measurements of materials that run up or down from one floor to the next, such as piping or conduit. The value entered here represents the total amount of rise and/or drop and will be added to the length total. To set a rise/drop for the markup, enter a value; the unit of measure is automatically the same one used for the markup length. Rise/Drop is mutually exclusive with Depth.
- Segments of a the measurement can be split from the original markup. To do so,
CTRL-clickthe desired segment and select Split Poly. To break a the measurement into its segmented parts, select Split All.
Select a markup to reveal its control handles. Each handle controls a different aspect of the markup's size and orientation.
To rotate the markup, click and drag the orange handle outside the markup (when the markup is first placed, it will be at the top). By default, the markup is rotated in increments of 15°; to rotate in increments of 1°, hold down SHIFT while dragging.
To move the entire markup together, click and drag a part of it other than the control handles.
To rotate the caption, click and drag the orange handle directly over it. By default, the markup is rotated in increments of 15°; to rotate in increments of 1°, hold down SHIFT while dragging.To return a rotated caption to its original position, right-click it and select Reset Caption Position. Note that only the cumulative length caption can be rotated; while the length captions of the segments cannot be rotated, they can be adjusted to align on the segment or horizontally in the Appearance Properties.

The appearance of the Polylength measurement is configurable, including its line and fill color, line width and style, opacity, and font characteristics for the caption.
To change the appearance of a Polylength measurement, select it and click the Properties panel. Several properties will also be available on the Properties toolbar when the markup is selected.
Color: Sets the line color.
Fill Color: Sets a fill color.
Highlight: Makes the fill color and/or hatch pattern transparent so underlying content shows through.
Opacity: Sets opacity level of the line and endpoints, from 0 (invisible) to 100 (opaque).
Fill Opacity: Sets the fill opacity, from 0 (invisible) to 100 (opaque).
Line Width: Sets the line thickness in points. A setting of 0 effectively renders the line invisible.
Style: Determines the line pattern.
Show Caption: Select to include caption text on the markup. Click Edit to choose which measurements to include.
Font: Sets the font used for the selected text.
Font Size: Sets the size of the font.
Text Color: Sets the color of text.
Font Style: These settings control the formatting of the text. Options include Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strikethrough. Generally, any combination of these styles can be applied to format the text.
